Before Treatment
Before a Skin Biopsy
A skin biopsy is a quick, safe procedure performed under local anesthesia to diagnose skin conditions.
What is a Skin Biopsy?
- A small skin sample taken under local anesthesia for diagnosis
- Used to diagnose or rule out skin diseases including skin cancer
- The procedure takes only a few minutes
- Results are typically available within 4-6 weeks
Types of Biopsy
- Shave biopsy: a superficial sample, usually no stitches needed
- Punch biopsy: a deeper sample, may require 1-2 stitches
- Excisional biopsy: removal of the entire lesion for examination
How to Prepare
- No special preparation is needed for most biopsies
- Inform the doctor about blood thinners or allergies
- The biopsy is performed on the day of your appointment - plan recovery time accordingly
Important to Know
This appointment is for skin biopsies only. It is not suitable for cosmetic mole removal. Biopsy recommendations and treatment plans should be discussed with your referring dermatologist.
