Our Surgical Procedures

Shave Biopsy

A quick diagnostic procedure involving removal of the superficial portion of a skin lesion using a specialized blade. The sample is sent for histopathological examination to determine its nature.

  • Performed under local anesthesia
  • Suitable for raised or protruding skin lesions
  • Minimal scarring with rapid healing
  • Results typically available within a few weeks

Recommended when a lesion needs to be evaluated for potential malignancy or when a superficial lesion needs removal and diagnosis simultaneously.

Punch Biopsy

A diagnostic procedure using a circular cutting tool to obtain a full-thickness skin sample. This method provides a deeper tissue specimen that includes the epidermis, dermis, and sometimes subcutaneous tissue.

  • Performed under local anesthesia
  • Provides full-thickness tissue sample for diagnosis
  • Essential for rash evaluation and deep lesion assessment
  • May be closed with a suture in certain locations such as the scalp

Indicated for diagnosing inflammatory skin conditions, rashes, and lesions where deeper tissue examination is required.

Surgical Excision

Complete removal of a skin lesion including surrounding margins of healthy tissue. The excised specimen is sent for pathological analysis to confirm complete removal and diagnosis.

  • Full removal with safety margins
  • Performed under local anesthesia
  • Closed with sutures for optimal cosmetic result
  • Pathology confirms complete excision

Recommended for lesions that need complete removal, including suspicious moles, confirmed skin cancers, and lesions where clear margins are essential.

The gold standard for treating skin cancer, offering the highest cure rate (up to 99%) while preserving maximum healthy tissue. Dr. Kaplan is an ACMS Fellow with extensive Mohs surgery experience.

  • Highest cure rate for skin cancer - up to 99%
  • Real-time microscopic margin examination
  • Maximum preservation of healthy tissue
  • Same-day diagnosis and complete removal

The treatment of choice for basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and other skin cancers, especially in cosmetically or functionally sensitive areas.

Diagnosis Before Treatment

At our clinic, every patient undergoes a thorough clinical and dermoscopic examination before any surgical intervention. Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment - it determines the appropriate surgical approach, ensures no malignancy is overlooked, and guides the most effective and safest treatment plan.

Every suspicious lesion undergoes comprehensive dermoscopic evaluation. If malignancy is suspected, a biopsy is performed and the tissue is sent for pathological analysis before definitive treatment.

Pathology & Laboratory Analysis

All biopsied and excised tissue specimens are sent for histopathological analysis by expert dermatopathologists. Dr. Kaplan personally reviews the pathology reports and discusses the findings with each patient, ensuring continuity of care from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up.
